How long approx will it take for a 6yr old with type 2 diabetes to have regular BGL readings?

Do I have to check my blood reading everyday at lunch? Will it make a difference if I don't do it everyday?

My husband's young daughter stays with us during the school holidays and she has type 1 diabetes. We always keep her diabetes supplies close at hand, but occasionally when we are out and have to test her sugars we don't have a tissue handy to wipe the drop of blood from her finger and my husband has been known to wipe it with his thumb. When the child's mother found this out she was very upset and said we were putting her in danger by increasing her risk of getting an infection. We can appreciate this and will always keep some tissues with the testing kit now. However, we wondered whether the risk of infection from a small prick on the thumb is higher in a child with diabetes? Are they more prone to getting an infection than a child without diabetes, or is the concern more that when they do get an illness it can be harder to manage their diabetes?

My son has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, when doing his BGL tests he can’t seem to get enough blood form the finger prick to get a decent test result (strip shows yellow still meter display says error etc). Are there any hints for getting this right? He’s been through about 20 strips already and he’s only had his meter since yesterday. He (and I) are frustrated!

Our 2 year old son has diabetes and we find the worst time for us is when he is sleeping. Do you know if there is a smaller version of the Glucowatch available in Australia? Or any other constant monitoring in the works?

How do you monitor diabetes?
