Can a person with type 1 diabetes carbohydrate load before a sporting event?

I have started swimming training two mornings and two afternoons. The morning swim is before my morning dose is due. My usual dose is 4 novorapid/26 protophane at 7am. On swimming mornings, I have 1 novorapid/1 piece of fruit (BGL 10.1) at 6.15am then swim from 6.45 to 7.30am. BGL is now 17.1. I go home and have the rest of my dose of 3 novorapid/26 protophane and eat breakfast of four serves. My levels keep going up to over 27.5 BGL taken at 9.30am. By 11.30am I have come down to about 19 BGL and then 1pm around 9 BGL. By 3pm I am down to 4.8 BGL. When I do afternoon swimming training I have no problem with levels. They are usually around 9 BGL before and then 6 BGL after the swim. Why is there such a different reaction to exercise in the morning compared to the afternoon. By the way, my levels overall have very much improved with the extra exercise I am doing. I just have trouble with the morning swim levels.

I have type 1 diabetes and I am in the girls football team. We are going to an all day tournament that lasts a whole school day. I don’t know what stuff I need to take.

I’m wanting to lose some weight, but I’m afraid of exercising because I’m afraid my BGL will drop too low. Should I just exercise and adjust insulin doses if needed or not exercise? What should I do?

If you’re a teen in middle school and have lots of homework everyday how do you fit exercise into your day to keep your blood sugar levels down?

I have a 15yr old son who has had diabetes for 3 years. He enjoys playing club basketball but finds it difficult to control his lows during the game. We take all the recommended steps for vigorous exercise for over 30mins ie lower insulin doses, eat extra carb's, drinks gatorade, and even takes some glucose tablets before the game. All this and still we cannot stop the hypos! The best solution we found when he was playing on Sat a.m. was to miss the morning insulin and administer short acting insulin on return home. Of course, this solution was severely frowned upon when mentioned to the DR's at clinic - but no alternative was suggested!
