My son who is 29 went for a job medical and they did a blood prick on a blood strip tester (how accurate are these testers) as they said his blood sugar reading was 16. They sort of said he should get it checked out at some time. I have been told this is very high and possibly urgent. Can you tell me if this is so and at his age if he has diabetes would it be type 1 or type 2 and how urgent is it to get a proper blood test?

I’ve got a few questions to ask: 1. What gave rise to initial concerns of diabetes? What are the early indicators of diabetes? 2. How are these concerns developed into a community health issue? 3. What groups within the community are most at risk, what is the impact on their health, and is there a particular risk environment?

My son who is 12 years was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last December. He is absent from school at least 1-2 days each week. He say’s he feels tired, and he and his friends tell me that there’s nothing wrong at school. Is it a normal behaviour for a child with diabetes to be absent from school this often? His blood glucose levels are in the normal range (4-8). I am a single mother and this whole situation is sometimes breaking me down that I feel depressed but I still get up and go on because my children need me. Please advise me.

I’ve just been told on 10 December that I have type 1 diabetes. 2 weeks before I told my mother that I was going to the bathroom a lot and could I have a note for school. My Nan noticed I had lost a lot of weight and told my mum to take me to the doctor but she didn’t. So one week later I was taken in to hospital very poorly. If my Mum had noticed 2 weeks earlier by my mum would I have not been so bad?

I have type 2 diabetes and I think it’s so hard for me. I can’t resist chocolate. All my teeth are sweet teeth. I like Westmead Hospital and I think I like being an outpatient because I like seeing my friends. I turn 10 on 29th November. My brothers name is DJ, it stands for Daniel Jonathan. My mum and dad are always here for me, taking care of my diabetes and me.

My daughter started her first period a few days ago. The first day, she had a hypo (3.6) at lunchtime even though she hadn't done any extra exercise and had eaten normal amount of breakfast and more carbs for morning tea than usual. She was then very high (between 17 and 19) for the rest of the day. The second day, her bgl was 14 when she woke up, she had her normal insulin in the morning, had lots of carbs for breakfast, had a hypo (2.8) before morning tea and then was very high (between 15 and 27) for the rest of the day... are these variations in bgl's because of her period? And is this likely to happen every month? She currently has mixtard 30/70 before breakfast, actrapid before afternoon tea, protophane at supper/bed-time and novorapid for corrections (but we haven't done any corrections over the last couple of days).
