Question: As a child care worker, what strategies can i implement in order to include a new child that has diabetes?

Answer:

Hi Lauren,

Thank you for your question to the forum.

We always advise schools and child care centres that they require 3 main things when they have a child with diabetes coming into their care.

These are:

1. A meeting with the parents/carer’s to discuss/clarify/outline the child’s needs, prior to the child commencing school/preschool

2. A management plan that comes from the child’s diabetes team (the simpler the better, explaining medication times/insulin doses/BGL testing times, how to treat a low BGL, how to treat a high BGL and what to do in an emergency)

3. Training/education for ALL staff on diabetes care whilst at school or preschool (this can be done by parents if able, the child’s diabetes educator or The Australian Diabetes Council has a free service to do this, in addition to a webcast of a school visit available our website).

We also have a school pack which includes useful resources, available from our customer careline on 1300 342 238. Please feel free to call us.

Best Wishes,
