Question asked by: Manon (15) ---NSW

Question: i was just wondering with my insulin pump when i take the site off every 3 days it sometimes bleeds a bit. is that normal?

Answer:

Hi Manon.

Thanks for your question to the forum.

It is not a normal occurrence, but occasionally it does happen. It typically occurs when a site is too close to a blood vessel, near the skin surface.

Usually it doesn’t cause any problems. However, one concern is when there is a more deep bleed, which you may feel as a hard uncomfortable lump under the skin, in which case you may need to see your doctor.

You mentioned that you often experience bleeding. At this stage we would advise you to mention this to your Diabetes Educator, as they will probably want to explore the reason for this. For example, through a review of your cannula insertion and removal technique.

Best wishes,
