Question asked by: David (40) ---VIC

Question: Hello, My son is 6yo Type1 and normally has a major needle (21ml) in the morning and a small insulin (3ml) before dinner, but before dinner tonight he was low, so I didn't give it to him, but rather moniored his levels. A while after eating his was 5 BGL and the same at bedtime. He's now asleep without having his small needle. Given lately he's been waking up low, am I safe to miss this needle, or should I now give him a shot while he's asleep. He had 18.5ml Levermir in the morning which is 24hr.

Answer:

Hi David,

Thank you for your question to the forum.

It is very important that insulin is given as prescribed by your diabetes team. I can understand though why you didn't give the insulin if your son's BGL was low.

As a general rule, if the BGL is low, treat the hypo as recommended, re-test the BGL and then give the usual dose of insulin that is due.

I recommend you call your doctor or diabetes educator for further assistance.

Kind Regards,
