Question asked by: Paige (14) ---Outside Australia

Question: hey, I was watching tv and they were talking about how fatty foods can trigger diabetes why dont they say type 2 instead of diabetes. All the kids tell me im diabetic because im fat wich is not the case can you please be careful and more aware of what u say on tv ??

Answer:

Thanks for writing to the question forum. Working with kids and teens with diabetes for many years we are very aware that the media and how they portray diabetes can be frustrating.

At the Australian Diabetes Council we work very hard to educate the public about the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately people still get them mixed up.

If you are finding it difficult to explain type 1 diabetes to other kids at school, you could suggest showing the DVD "Professor Bumblebee's Guide to Type 1 Diabetes" which explains how type 1 diabetes develops. This DVD is available from the Australian Diabetes Council.

You may also wish to write to the program that showed the story on diabetes to ask them to correct this information.

We will continue to work to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes in young people.
