Question asked by: Janet-Ann (37) ---WA

Question: Hi I am currently doing my cert3 in education support and need some information regarding effects on development social /emotional physical and cognitive in children with type 1 diabetes. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Answer:

Dear Janet-Ann

Thank you for your question.

Australian Diabetes Council has developed some booklets called "Is it You, Them or Diabetes?! in age groups - 0-2, 2-4, 5-7,8-12,13-17 with information about behaviour and food issues.  You will find them in the Parent/Carer section of the kidsandteens website www.diabeteskidsandteens.com.au

You will also find information on feelings and coping with a diagnosis of diabetes on the same website in:

Living with Type 1

Dealing with D in the teens section

and Your Feelings in the KidsZone.

For more information I would advise you to contact the Social Work department of the main Paediatric Hospital The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick, John Hunter Children's Hospital in Newcastle or the psychologist at Royal North Shore Hospital.  They should be able to give you the information you need.
